If you live somewhere that experiences all four seasons, then you need to have a variety of things installed to be able to be comfortable year round due to weather, and maintenance work needs to be done to make sure that nothing breaks down. If you live somewhere where the weather swings from below zero to well above twenty and you get everything from rain to hail to wind to snow, then you will want to make sure that you have these things installed in your home and have them maintained regularly.
Air conditioners are necessities, especially with rising temperatures every summer. When temperatures are between 32˚C and 40˚C, then you are in the range for experiencing heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Anything above 40˚C will more likely lead to heat exhaustion. You can still suffer heat exhaustion at lower temperatures as well as other heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke. Air conditioning is not only for comfort, with increasing temperatures it is a necessity.
You cannot live in Canada without some kind of heating system. Whether it is a furnace, a boiler, or even fireplaces, you need heating to survive the winter due to the extreme cold temperatures. When your body temperature begins to fall below 35˚C, then you enter hypothermia. As hypothermia sets in you start to shiver, slur your speech or mumble, your pulse becomes weak, your breathing becomes slow or shallow, you become drowsy and low energy, you suffer from confusion or memory loss, and you may lose consciousness. Infants suffering from hypothermia may turn bright red and be cold to the touch. While houses can be very well insulated, they still need to be heated.
Frozen pipes in the winter can cause disaster. If you have older pipe systems, then you should get them looked over to make sure that there are no cracks or damage. The last thing you want is a water leak in the middle of winter when your yard is frozen.
In-floor heating is not just a luxury for your bathroom anymore (though you can definitely still have it just installed in the bathroom to keep your toes warm in the wintertime). In-floor heating, or radiant heating, which can be paired with any type of flooring (yes, even certain types of carpet!) is a great way to heat your whole home. It is also surprisingly cost-effective.
If you live somewhere where you experience all four seasons you may not have a very hot summer, unlike those who live in the south where the ambient temperature and sun heat their pools to a desirable temperature, you may need a bit of help to take the chill out of your pool! A pool heater does not have to run 24/7; you can simply turn it on a short while before you want to dive in and then it off once you have finished.
