A burst sewer pipe is a nightmare that no homeowner wants to deal with. When a pipe bursts from inside your home it is usually easy to spot very early on within the pipe bursting. If a pipe bursts in your home you will end up with sewage backups, mould and water damage, and possibly rat or bug infestations. You will be able to tell right away that something has gone very wrong. If a pipe bursts in your yard though then it may not be as noticeable as quickly, the problem with this is that an outdoor burst sewer pipe can lead to your water supply being contaminated. It is a plumbing emergency, and the sooner you realize that something has gone wrong, the sooner that you can handle it.
So what can you look for in your yard to see if a pipe has burst underground?
One of the surest signs that you have a sewer pipe leak is that you can smell a bad odour in and around your yard. Sewer systems are airtight and do not let out any gases, so if you have these smells in your yard, it means that something went wrong. Try to determine if the bad odour is from your yard and if so then you need to do something about it right away.
Bright Green or Lush Patches in Yard
If you have isolated patches of bright green or extra lush grass on your lawn, then you may have a sewage leak. Sewage is a fertilizer and so if there is a leak in the line, then it may end up feeding your grass and creating a pocket of beautiful green grass (that you would rather not be so beautiful). This can be the first sign that something is wrong as it can be indicative of a smaller leak.
Indents In Lawn or Under Paving Stones
If a leak underground has become significant and fully saturated the ground, then you may end up with soil dissipation. If this happens, then there could end up being indents in your lawn or underneath paving stones in your yard. You will be able to see a dip that runs along where the sewage leak is occurring.
This is a huge indication that something has gone wrong! It is an indication that there has been a prolonged leak and needs to be dealt with as fast as possible.
